Dettori Equals Eddery's Royal Ascot Record
The adage, you can't keep a good man down, would have been apt for evergreen 49-year-old jockey Frankie Dettori who nailed three winners on the final day of what has been a superb Royal Ascot meeting. Featuring an unprecedented 36 races held across the five days of racing, irrepressable Dettori's hattrick put him ahead of Jim Crowley for the leading jockey title, leaving bookmakers who offered $21 about his chances on Saturday morning feeling quite ill. On yet another red-letter day for Dettori, the Italian-born hoop left the racecourse having won the Coventry Stakes (Campanelle), Coronation Stakes (Alpine Star) and St James's Palace Stakes (Palace Pier). Now having won every Group 1 race on Royal Ascot's calendar, Dettori's six winners for the meeting drew him level on 73 to share a record with the late Pat Eddery – although Lester Piggot still holds the overall benchmark. Putting his feat into perspective, theguardian.com reports Dettori saying, "It's been an unbelievable day, an unbelievable Royal Ascot. To come out of here with six wins over the week is not easy. You can all sit back and say: 'This'll win, that'll win,' but we've still got to go out and do it."
