Phoenix Stakes Pair Form Better Than It Looks

Friday, 19th June 2020

Trainer Stu Kendrick believes the form around his two runners in the Listed The Phoenix Stakes at Doomben on Saturday is better than it looks, reports racingqueensland.com.au. Kendrick has Cosmic Gossip (Spill the Beans-O'Venus, by Anabaa) and Way Beyond (Spill the Beans-Kylie's Way, by Menifee) in the 1615m race and said, "There's not much between them and their form doesn't read too well after they were both beaten at their last starts. But their runs in the JJ Atkins weren't that bad." Cosmic Gossip finished twelth in the Gr1 JJ Atkins Plate over 1400m, run on 6 June, while Way Beyond crossed the finish line in fifteenth position. "Way Beyond got chopped out at the start and was shuffled back to last but he ran on well to be beaten six lengths," Kendrick revealed. "Cosmic Gossip also got back and was tightened for room about 200 metres out. She wasn't beaten too far either and was never extended. Way Beyond is bred to get over a little further and I think Cosmic Gossip should run the trip even though she's by Spill The Beans whose progeny seem to just get 1600 metres. Way Beyond has always shown he was capable of winning over further and his form before the JJ Atkins was good behind horses like Dusty Tycoon and Rothfire." Way Beyond is still a maiden with four placings from seven starts, and was a $50,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale purchase. Cosmic Gossip sold through the same sale for $80,000, and has won twice from eight starts to date.
