Juddmonte's Siskin Wins Irish 2,000 Guineas

Monday, 15th June 2020

First Defense (Unbridled’s Song), Juddmonte Farms US-based Gr1 Forego winner, has sired the winner of the 2020 Gr1 Irish 2,000 Guineas. At The Curragh on Friday, Khalid Abdullah’s hitherto undefeated juvenile colt Siskin graduated to the top of the 3YO class in Ireland with a powerful turn of foot over the concluding stakes of the 8 furlong affair to make it five from five, including the Gr1 Phoenix Stakes as a 2YO. It wasn’t all plain sailing for the highly regarded colt. Trained by Ger Lyons, who celebrated his first Classic victory, Siskin required a bit of don’t-argue shouldering and all the nous of jockey Colin Keane to find a clear passage when hemmed in near the fence with 400m to go. Once daylight appeared and he was able to balance up, Siskin shot away for a commanding victory over a field that included a half dozen Ballydoyle contenders disinclined to give an inch. With Royal Ascot off the table, Lyons confirmed the Gr1 Sussex Stakes is likely to be Siskin’s next target.
