Bargains in Battle for Gr2 The Roses
Just $135,000 could, technically, have bought somebody half a dozen live chances, including Vanna Girl (see above item) in Saturday's Gr2 The Roses (1800m) at Eagle Farm. Even allowing for the reality that, under normal conditions, there'd be a larger influx of southern hemisphere raiders – many with big ticket yearling prices – a cursory glance at the make-up of Saturday's fillies' feature reveals that sometimes the size of owners' dreams matters more than the size of their wallets. With the exception of California Salto ($800,000) and Sky Horse ($180,000), all remaining competitors sold through the ring could have been had for $80,000 or less. Four of the 15 carded runners weren't sold, leaving six fillies – over half the field that did sell – that went for $40,000 or less. They include, in card order, Florent ($22,000), favourite Vanna Girl ($40,000), Dee Day Diva ($22,000), Al Jood ($24,000), Adalease ($2,000) and Hallowed Girl ($25,000).
