TROA Chairman Slams Caulfield Cup Proposal

A proposal by the Melbourne Racing Club to switch the iconic Caulfield Cup to late in November has brought a stinging rebuke from Jonathan Munz, chairman of Australia’s Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Association (TROA). With the Australian Trainers Association also coming out on Monday against the possible move, Munz noted in a racing.com article titled Stakeholders Condemn Cup Proposal, that the notion of switching the race to the end of the carnival would be “'effectively wrecking the national racing calendar”. He commented, "The MRC proposal is ill-advised and self-indulgent and not in the interests of the racing industry as a whole. It is just not sensible to run the major Caulfield Cup Carnival races after Melbourne Cup Week and take away a whole series of important lead-up races.” He also alluded to a domino effect, saying, "Just as importantly, that would result in there not being enough time to get horses ready for the Autumn Carnival.” One of the leading owners in Australia, Munz added, "RVL [Racing Victoria] has done a great job keeping racing open and that good work needs to continue. Now is not the time to cause further disruption…”
