Victor Ludorum Atones in French 2,000 Guineas

Tuesday, 2nd June 2020

The winning sequence of highly vaunted French 3YO colt Victor Ludorum is back on track. After rattling off a hattrick of wins as a juvenile, the son of Darley’s ill-fated stallion Shamardal was surprisingly beaten when long odds-on in Longchamp’s Gr3 Prix de Fontainebleau early in May. Despite that defeated, with the COVID-19 influenced switch to Deauville on France’s west coast, Victor Ludorum was a short-priced favourite to atone, and atone he did. In the Gr1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains (1600m) he came from well of the pace after dawdling early in the Classic to sweep into the lead over the final 200m for a 1.5-length win over The Summit and Alson. The winner, owned by Godolphin, and the two place-getters are all trained by Andre Fabre who was celebrating his eighth win in the French equivalent of the 2,000 Guineas.
