Betting Surge Accompanies UK Racing Return
Like revolutions which often boil up during periods of reform, the long-awaited return of horse racing in Britain (at Newcastle in England) yesterday has been accompanied by a large surge in betting turnover. Possibly not unexpected, bookmakers reported higher turnover than would normally be the case on a Monday, reports racingpost.com. A spokesperson for Ladbrokes said, "The return of British racing has been welcomed with open arms by our regular racing customers and has proved just how much people have missed live sport.” Meanwhile, on a day of masks and wide-apart social distancing for jockeys in the parade ring, Betfair reported that around £1 million was matched per race, a considerable increase on normal activity for the corresponding period last year.
