Heatwave Forces The Valley Abandonment
A forecast high of 42 degrees for Melbourne late on Friday has forced Racing Victoria and Moonee Valley officials to abandon the scheduled evening meeting. The decision, according to AAP, was made following consultation with Racing Victoria’s veterinary department in conjunction with the Bureau of Meteorology, plus relevant trainer and jockey associations. Although there are no plans to reconvene the meeting for a later date, the Club will endeavour “to hold the Lunar New Year celebrations on February 7”. The cancellation followed a prescient call by NSW officials early in the week to switch Saturday’s Rosehill meeting to Royal Randwick, ahead of the forecast heatwave set to impact Sydney over the weekend as it moves east. Meanwhile, Friday night's Tasmanian Derby meeting in Hobart has been postponed until Saturday with high temperatures expect to drop 12 degrees overnight.
