Seventh Heaven in Manfred Stakes
On the subject of small fields (see above item), Saturday’s Melbourne meeting at Caulfield also has some pretty small fields, with five of the events fielding 8 runners or less. One of those is the Gr3 Manfred Stakes (1200) for 3YOs where, despite a field of just 7, it’s a race that could provide a lot of context for the sophomores through the second half of the season. Reasonably weighted on 59.5kg, given he’s the only horse to have got his nose, literally, in front of brilliant Queenslander Alligator Blood, Waikato Stud-destined Super Seth is a surprisingly tempting $4.00 chance. Although being challenged in the betting by his Anthony Freedman-trained and Pinecliff Racing-owned stablemate Groundswell at $5.00, the $2.90 race chalk is boom Adelaide 3YO Dalasan. Trained by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, he actually started favourite in Super Seth’s Caulfield Guineas before winning at Flemington, and is a winner first-up. The chances don’t stop there either. Both heavily spruiked colt Spend ($4.50), undefeated in his only Sydney start, and Blue Diamond-placed Free of Debt ($11) will have admirers too.
