Wyndspelle A Serious Chance for Second Major

Wednesday, 22nd January 2020

Otaki based trainers Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard are planning on staying close to home with Gr1 winning stallion Wyndspelle (Ifraaj-Western Star, by High Chaparral), targeting the Gr1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic (1600m) at Otaki on February 22 as an opportunity to demote his 4-time runner up status in Gr1 company, while simultaneously avoiding Gr1 champions Te Akau Shark and Melody Belle. The 6YO entire was narrowly beaten in Saturday's Gr1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham, making plenty of ground on a leader-biased track to run second behind front-runner The Mitigator. "I'm really proud of him. He is a special horse that seems to find a way to feature," Benner told NZ Racing Desk. "He does hold a nomination for the Herbie Dyke (Gr1, 2000m) but ten furlongs has proven to be too far in the past… We might just keep our powder dry and come here to Otaki. It looks a race that he is really going to be hard to beat in at weight for age." The winner of the Gr1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) two starts prior has placed 6 times at Gr1 level, won at Gr2 and placed in both Gr2 and Gr3 company, earning his connections close to $700,000 in prizemoney.
