Lindsay Park Attempts 3YO Karaka Million Repeat

Wednesday, 22nd January 2020

Meanwhile, last start winner and Gr2 pacegetter Conqueror (Fastnet Rock-Diademe, by Savabeel) will run in the $1 million Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on Saturday in a bid to replicate the success of stablemate Long Leaf (Fastnet Rock) who saluted in the race last year for co-trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig. Hayes is thrilled with the condition of the smartly bred 3YO going into Saturday’s test, and rates him as good as - or better than - Long Leaf. “Long Leaf was probably more of a sprinter and this horse is more of a miler,” he told NZ Racing Desk. “With his stallion value and great pedigree we have tried to knock through a good class mile race. We went close without winning.” The son of Fastnet Rock has been consistently impressive in Gr1 company, running second in the Gr2 Sandown Guineas (1600m), fourth in the Gr3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and finished strongly for 6th (beaten 4 lengths) in the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in October. Hayes suggested that, depending on how he runs on Saturday, the colt could remain in New Zealand for the Gr1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) on February 8. “I am sure he is a horse that will thrive over 2000m and even a mile and a half…He will be set for the Sydney Carnival after that.”
