Godolphin Could Work Magic Again in 2021
In 2018 Godolphin returned to buying yearlings at the Gold Coast. The equal most expensive of their 8 purchases was a $600,000 Snitzel-Samaready filly. Named Exhilarates, one year later she won the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic with a brilliant display and subsequently placed in the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas last weekend. During that same 2019 period, Godolphin took home just 5 yearlings from the Gold Coast sale, one of which, Conceited, lined up in last Saturday's Magic Millions 2YO Classic with strong support. The Brazen Beau-Classy Chloe colt drew poorly, jumped awkwardly, raced back and wide the whole trip, and after getting a slight check turning for home, rattled off quick sectionals to place third behind Away Game (see below). Take nothing away from the deserving winner, but run the race again where Conceited gets a better marble, and Godolphin could conceivably be 2 from 2 in just 2 years. At 2020's record-breaking sale, Godolphin Australia CEO Vin Cox and his team walked away with 6 yearlings, including a Medaglia d'Oro son of former Champion 3YO Filly Streama (Stratum) from Murrulla Stud. The 5 fillies, from some of the country's finest nurseries, are all beautifully pedigreed and look the part. History has a habit of repeating, and it would come as no surprise if the first home in the 2021 edition of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic carries the famous blue silks. Meanwhile, with natural improvement, next year's Magic Millions 3YO Guineas over 1400m could prove perfect for Conceited, while Exhilarates could appear in the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares.
