Ryan Heads Down Highway with Debutant

Wednesday, 8th January 2020

Leading Sydney trainer Gerald Ryan has opted to take promising unraced 3YO colt Navy Commander (Exceed and Excel) down the highway to Canberra for his first start. A half-brother to three stakes-performers including Meryl, winner of the Gr3 Scarborough Stakes in Melbourne and the Gr3 BJ McLachlan Stakes in Brisbane, as well as stakes-placed Chosen Idol and Miss Idyllic, Navy Commander's dam is a half-sister to Gr1 Salinger Stakes-placed Cosmic Strike. A winner and placed in his past two Sydney trials, Navy Commander was a $500,000 purchase by Sun Bloodstock from the draft of Riversdale at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, and is set to debut in the Affinity Technologies Maiden (1000m) at 4.20pm. Update: Canberra's Wednesday racing has been postponed due to poor air quality.
