Latest Bushfire Donation Updates
Inspired by the commitment shown by a number of its senior members, the National Jockeys Trust (NJT) is the latest racing organisation to promise financial assistance to the bushfire appeals, reports AAP. “Due to unprecedented catastrophic bushfires around Australia, we believe there is a dire need for support, in particularly the animal community,” Paul Innes, NJT Chief Executive said. “Being an industry that relies on animals and our concern about animal welfare, the trustees have decided that it would be appropriate that rather than the funds coming to the Jockeys Trust, the funds will be directed to animal welfare groups around Australia to provide support for injured wildlife. We’ve lost so many animals, there’s been human loss and so many properties. It was just fitting I think being part of the industry which appreciates the majestic thoroughbred that we give back to animal welfare.” The cricket match, which is now in its eighth year, is one of the major events for the NJT who have provided more than $4 million in assistance to more than 290 jockeys and the families of jockeys who have been lost. Tab.com.au, who are a major partner of the NJT, also announced they are matching team member donations to charities supporting the people, wildlife, and communities affected by bush fire, and are also providing open ended paid leave to employees who are volunteer fire fighters and reservists.
