At Ascot in Perth, Kooringal Stud stallion Duporth (Red Ranson-Staging, by Success Express) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when 6YO 6YO gelding Hey Doc (Duporth-Heyington Honey, by General Nediym) scored a comprehensive 2.5-length victory for trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy in the $1 million Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) over the local duo 6YO gelding Vital Silver & 10YO gelding Rock Magic. In what amounted to daylight robbery, the east coast raider jumped perfectly from his wide barrier, slid across, controlled the tempo into the straight, and when in-form hoop Luke Currie slipped the gelding more reign, it was all over bar the shouting. The well executed coup took Hey Doc’s record to 9 wins (including the Gr1 Australian Guineas, Gr1 Manikato Stakes, Gr2 Bill Stutt Stakes, Gr3 CS Hayes Stakes and Gr3 Aurie’s Star Handicap) & 4 placings (including the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas, Gr3 Manfred Stakes and Gr3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes) from 23 starts for earnings of $2,387,300. That’s a very tidy return on the $85,000 outlaid to acquire the winner at the 2015 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale where he was consigned by Rosemont Stud.
