Pearce Bros Aiming For First Gr1 Victory
Co-trainers Ben and Daniel Pearce just missed their debut Gr1 victory when Vital Silver (Wanted-Vintage Silver, by Marooned) ran second in the Gr1 Manikato Stakes last month, reported punters.com.au. The brothers have been training together for a couple of years, and will look to go one better when Vital Silver runs in the Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes on Saturday. "He's going well," Ben Pearce told punters.com.au. "Obviously he ran a good race in the Manikato. Some people were saying it was an improved run, but he's always shown us plenty of ability, going back to his win in the Roma Cup. He's always had a fair bit of form on the board." Purchased at the Perth Yearling Sales after initially being passed in, Vital Silver has won eight of his 17 starts. "I bought him before Dan and I had formed our partnership and syndicated him," he said. "On type, he was a nice horse, had a good strong shoulder and a good hindquarter. Being a December foal, he was a little bit behind, that was one thing I kept in mind when looking at him." Vital Silver didn't debut until he was a spring 4YO, running third on debut, then winning three races in succession, and has proved to be a consistent type, only out of the placings on three occasions (once when fourth in the Gr2 Gilgai Stakes). "It would be super (to win a Gr1). When we first went into partnership two years ago, people were saying what were our goals? Our first goal was to win one of the good WA races, and we managed to pick up the Karrakatta Plate in April, so I suppose our next goal after that would be to win a Gr1," he said. Vital Silver is a half-brother to Listed winner Silver Empire (Second Empire) and stakes placed Touch of Silver (Saxon).
