Weekend To Remember For Parnham Family
On a day when William Pike put on a master-class at Ascot's Railway Stakes meeting, the Parnham family had plenty to celebrate themselves. Forty minutes before the rich Gr1 feature, trainer Neville Parnham enjoyed a result he'll never forget when one of the rank outsiders of the field War Saint (War Chant) held off a barrage of chasers to win the $500,000 Gr2 WA Guineas (1600m). Although the winning colt was ridden by his son Chris, not all family members were thrilled. Parnham senior's elder son Stephen was aboard fancied filly Kay Cee (Playing God) who flew from back in the field to miss by the tiniest of margins after being held up. The elder Parnham brother might not have won the Guineas but a close up third – beaten less than a length – aboard the stable's outsider Platoon in the Railway Stakes (see below) would have eased his disappointment somewhat. Earlier on the day, the family also combined for placings in the Listed Jungle Mist Classic (Dance Music) and Carbine Club of WA Stakes (Wrinkly).
