Railway Stakes A Wide Open Affair

Wednesday, 20th November 2019

Saturday’s Gr1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in Perth is one of the most open elite mile events held this calendar year. Whilst on handicap ratings Darren Mcauliffe’s $101 shock-winner of the Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes winner ranks the highest, the race favourite at $6.00 is the trainer’s other entry, The Velvet King. The latter finished third, behind Gatting (second) and Star Exhibit (first), 10 days ago in the Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) but this time carries 5kg less than his stablemate and 3.5kg less than the winner after being beaten a half-length. Other runners at $11 or shorter are Best of Days, Achernar Star, Reykjavik, Tellem We’re Comin, Regal Power and Samizdat. Last night's barrier draw made little difference to the market.
