Boom Apprentice McNaught Gets First Gr1 Ride

Wednesday, 20th November 2019

Apprentice jockey Jade McNaught will make her Gr1 debut on Perfect Jewel (Redoute's Choice-Star Encounter, by Jeune) in the Gr1 Railway Stakes at Ascot on Saturday, reports thewest.com.au. Only eighteen months after beginning her riding career, McNaught is a good chance of becoming the first female jockey to win the $1 million feature race. In September, she became the first apprentice to ride six winners at an Australian metropolitan meeting at Belmont. "I started riding in May last year and I definitely didn't think I'd be riding in the big races. I just hoped I'd be riding in town," McNaught said. "I wouldn't mind riding any horse in the Railway let alone a decent chance like her. She was pretty unlucky last start but she still ran well. If she draws a gate she'll be right there." Perfect Jewel has won four of her 14 starts, and ran third last start in the Gr3 Perth Racing Asian Beau Stakes. The 5YO mare ran fourth in the Gr1 Railway Stakes last year, and won the Gr2 Western Australian Guineas as a 3YO.
