At Newcastle Jockey Club in NSW, deceased Darley stallion Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) celebrated a lucrative feature race triumph when Godolphin’s 5YO mare Savatiano (Street Cry-Retsina, by Redoute's Choice) was expertly handled by outstanding NZ hoop James McDonald to land the $1,000,000 Hunter (1300m). Crossing from a sticky 14 gate, McDonald then controlled the tempo before letting down the talented mare to accelerate clear of a classy field and win by 0.89 lengths over Tactical Advantage, who flew late down the outside. Bon Amis was 2.25-lengths adrift of the inner in third. Given the relative ease of the victory, one's initial thinking that McDonald had "stolen a march" on his fellow jockeys was quickly dispelled with notification that Savatiano had clocked a course record time of 1:15.76. The well deserved victory took Savatiano's record to 8 wins (including the Gr2 Tristarc, Gr3 Moreton Stakes & Listed Mona Lisa) and 11 placings (including the Gr3 Tibbie, Gr2 Blazer, Gr3 Maybe Mahal, Gr2 Millie Fox, Gr3 Newmarket, Gr3 Dark Jewel & Gr1 Tatt's Tiara) for $1,420,810 in earnings. McDonald was effusive in his post race comments, "She jumped straight to the front. Controlled the race. Never felt like getting beaten. She was just cruising. She's a marvel."
