Top Weight Casts Shadow Over Riccarton Fancy
Trainer Mark Oulaghan has some concerns about the weight Shadows Cast (Per Incanto-Ages Past, by Slavic) has been asked to carry in the Gr2 Coupland's Bakeries Mile today, reports NZ Racing Desk. Shadows Cast won his last start by 1.25-lengths in the Red Craze Bowl over 1400m carrying 63kg, and will carry 59kg today over 1600m. "It is going to be a bit of a test for him," Oulaghan said. "He showed he can carry it, but the way it is weighted, you have got those (other) horses down on 53 and 52 kilos. He is giving some of them six or seven kilos and especially if the track is a bit off it might not be ideal for him, but that's what handicap racing is and we have just got to take it as it is." One of those horses on the 52kg minimum is Son Of Maher (Al Maher-Dance Hit, by Tights), who dead-heated with Shadows Cast in the 2017 edition of the Coupland's Mile. Oulaghan is happy with the way Shadows Cast has travelled down to Riccarton from his Palmerston North base and is not overly perturbed about drawing the outside barrier in the 14 horse field.
