National Tote Pool A Real Possibility
In big news for punters, the Sydney Morning Herald revealed on Monday morning that Tabcorp, in cooperation with key racing authorities (primarily Racing NSW and Racing Victoria) are planning to create a National tote pool as early as the end of 2020. Initial results from the Spring Carnival show a significant downturn in betting turnover (which has been attributed to higher racefields fees and the introduction of the point-of-consumption tax), and the rise of corporate bookmakers and their offered fixed-odds wagering has had a devastating effect on the separate tote pools, which in turn has critical repercussions on the racing industry itself who benefit from a percentage of every dollar placed on the tote. The creation of a singular, national pool would give punters a bigger and more viable pool to bet into; providing the much-needed confidence that the bigger the pool the less effect on the final price. The integration technology needed to combine the three different tote operations (NSW, Victoria and Queensland) is in development, optimistically available early next year.
