At Flemington in Melbourne, Champion Coolmore stalwart Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added yet another Gr1 win to his mountainous sire haul when well-travelled 5YO mare Magic Wand (Galileo-Prudenzia, by Dansili) took up a lovely trailing position third in the run and maintained a strong gallop over the final two furlongs to claim the $2,000,000 Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m). Perhaps getting a little too far out of her ground, Champion NZ mare and pre-race favourite Melody Belle charged late in characteristic style but was denied by 1-length at the post with Godolphin warrior Hartnell bidding farewell to his racing career with another heady run to finish 0.1-length further away. Magic Wand's performance was particularly notable given she backed-up from Tuesday's Gr1 Melbourne Cup. Victory in the Mackinnon saw the valuable mare add further to a resume which includes 3 wins (including the Gr2 Ribblesdale & Listed Cheshire Oaks) and 9 placings (including the Gr1 Irish Champion, Gr1 Arlington Million, Gr1 Pretty Polly, Listed Wolferton, Gr1 Man O' War, Gr1 World Cup Invitational, Gr1 L'Opera & Gr1 Prix Vermeille) for $4,748,856 in earnings. Jockey Ryan Moore commented post race, "She's a wonderful mare and she's been very unfortunate not to win at Gr1 before today." He added, "She's just a very courageous, very tough, high-class mare who deserves her day today." Magic Wand now joins her Montjeu half-sister Chicquita as a Gr1 winner.
