At Flemington in Melbourne, Widden Stud stallion Nicconi (Bianconi-Nicola Lass, by Scenic) celebrated an emphatic Gr1 triumph when 5YO gelding Nature Strip (Nicconi-Strikeline, by Desert Sun) dispatched an elite Gr1 field with a devastating 3.25 length win in the $2,000,000 Gr1 Darley Sprint Classic (1200m). Stacking the field on the outside rail, Nature Strip upped a gear at the 400m before hitting turbo at the 300m mark and accelerating clear of the bunch. Top line filly Loving Gabby was second home, with last year's runner-up In Her Time a further 1.25 lengths away in third. Keeping alive his unbeaten record down the famous Flemington straight, the sometimes enigmatic Nature Strip took his record to 12 wins (including the Gr1 Moir Stakes, Gr1 Galaxy, Gr2 Ian McEwen Trophy, Gr2 Rubiton Stakes, Listed Creswick Stakes and Listed SAJC Lightning Stakes) and 2 placings from 19 starts for $3,979,285 in earnings. A delighted jockey, James McDonald, enthused post race, "How exciting. I'm thrilled for the horse and thrilled for the connections. He's just gone to a new level this preparation. He's a star!"
