Maribyrnong Plate Acceptors A Mixed Bag

Thursday, 7th November 2019

It is often said that a horse doesn't know what it cost, and the field for the Gr3 Maribyrnong Plate is a prime example of how racing can be a great equaliser. Of the thirteen runners, three didn't go through an auction ring, including Godolphin's stakes-placed Jerle (Exceed and Excel-Shannara, by Octagonal). The only other stakes horse in the field is Arctic Ice (Brazen Beau-Icy Maiden, by Xaar) who was passed in at Inglis Melbourne as a yearling. Of those that sold at public auction, prices range from $725,000 for Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate and unraced colt Rathlin (Fastnet Rock-Wiener, by More than Ready) to bargain priced Eastern Wind (Fighting Sun-Jungle Rock, by Fastnet Rock) who sold for $7,000 at the 2018 Inglis Monthly Digital November Sale and ran fifth on debut a couple of weeks ago. Another one with a big yearling price is NZB NYSS graduate Baaqyah (I Am Invincible-Exposed, by More Than Ready) who sold for $500,000 and is on debut. The early favourite is unraced colt Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa-Vasilissa, by Heart's Cry) who sold at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $300,000.
