Impi Back on The Warpath at Flemington
Given the manner in which South Africa's Springboks put England to the sword in last weekend's World Cup Rugby final, the opening race on Oaks Day at Flemington appears to have an omen tip, one with which the bookmakers ardently agree. Lightly raced Impi, the Zulu word for war or sometimes a collection of warriors, is out of Umfolosi, named after a famous game reserve in an administrative region of KwaZulu-Natal. Impi is certainly up for a battle, having surrendered his unbeaten crown when going down narrowly to undefeated Harbour Views at Geelong who, himself, is favourite for Race 6 on the card. Even with Kerrin McEvoy taking the ride for trainer Pat Carey in the 1800m BM90 and the benefit of a nice weight drop, the $1.70 odds look a little skinny.
