At Flemington in Melbourne, Coolmore Stud shuttler Declaration Of War (War Front-Tempo West, by Rahy) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when 3YO chestnut gelding Warning (Declaration Of War-Livia, by Galileo) stormed clear of his rivals on turning to capture the $2,000,000 Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m) by a decisive 3.25-lengths over 3YO colt Southern Moon with fellow 3YO colt Soul Patch a further length away. Having to work a little early after beginning better than expected, Warning settled into a rhythm off pace on a slow tempo before asserting himself in the straight and never looking seriously threatened. The victory took his record to 2 wins and 2 placings (including the Listed Super Impose) from 7 starts for $1,377,900 in earnings. The win also took Champion jockey Damien Oliver's record in the famous race to 6 wins, a run which began with another chestnut in Redding, way back in 1992. An excited Oliver commented past race, "We were leaning towards riding him quietly but he began so well I had to change plans pretty quick." He added, "I got there [to the front] a bit soon but I didn't want to get in his way. I just wanted to let him build his momentum. [But] I knew I'd had such an economical run and I had a lot of confidence in him."
