At Flemington in Melbourne, phenomenal Darley stallion Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond) celebrated a Gr1 triumph (and a rare Gr1 quinella in such a prestigious race) when 3YO colt Exceedance (Exceed And Excel-Bonnie Mac, by Thorn Park) captured the stallion-making $1,500,000 Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes by 0.4-length over fellow 3YO colt Bivouac with 1.5 lengths to impressive 3YO filly Libertini. Camping four positions back on the rail (after coming from barrier 10), Exceedance steered into the contest over the final two furlongs to deny an equally talented Bivouac who sat outside early leader Sartorial Splendor before dashing clear and looking the winner. Libertini showed she will be a force to be reckoned with moving forward. Exceedance took his record to 3 wins (including the Gr3 San Domenico) and 3 placings (including the Gr2 Run To Rose & Gr1 Golden Rose) from 6 starts for $1,134,615 in earnings. When asked what [Exceedance's] greatest attribute is post race, jockey Dwayne Dunn commented, "[It's] just his attitude. You can see, he just walks. [It's] just a high-class family."
