Messara Purchases Long Range Cup Hope
Major industry influence John Messara has decided to have a throw at the Melbourne Cup stumps. Arrowfield Stud’s principal has, according to racing.com, bought one of France’s most exciting staying prospects. Called Skyward, the 3YO had held an entry for June’s French Derby, the Gr1 Prix du Jockey Club (2100m), however he was late making his debut and missed that opportunity. Since then, the son of Gr1-winning sire Camelot is undefeated in three starts for trainer Fabrice Chappet, winning up to 2400m at Listed level. “He is an unbeaten, late developing horse. He was a late foal and he wasn’t touched as a 2YO,” said Messara who revealed the Melbourne Cup is one race he would like to win before he dies. Skyward’s final French race will be in the Listed Prix Vulcain (2500m) in late October before he gets turned out for the French Winter. Should he return for the European Summer in the fashion that Messara is hoping, plans will then be considered for shipping the entire to Australia.
