At Caulfield in Melbourne on Sunday, Scenic Lodge Stud stallion Blackfriars (Danehill-Kensington Gardens, by Grosvenor) added a Gr1 triumph when 9YO gelding Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars-Sister Theresa, by At Talaq) scored a head win for WA-VIC trainer Lindsey Smith in the $750,000 Gr1 Underwood Stks (1800m), holding out luckless favoured 6YO gelding Homesman and fellow 9YO gelding Gailo Chop. In an astonishing turn of events, just a week after WA trainer Darreen McAuliffe saddled $101 Gr1 Maybe Diva winner Gatting, WA’s Lindsey Smith, who also has a Warrnambool stable in Victoria, saddled $101 winner Black Heart Bart. For so long the quinella king in Gr1 races, Black Heart Bart turned back the clock nearly two-and-a-half years to taste Gr1 success again after getting a sweet run just off the speed for jockey Brad Rawiller. His latest surprise victory improved Black Heart Bart’s record to 17 wins (including the Gr1 Futurity Stakes, Gr1 C.F. Orr Stakes, Gr1 Underwood Stakes, Gr1 Memsie Stakes, Gr1 Goodwood, Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes, Gr3 Victoria Handicap, Gr3 WATC Northerly Stakes, Listed Birthday Stakes, Listed Bunbury Stakes, Listed Pinjarra Classic, Listed Cyril Flower Stakes, Listed WATC Carbine Club of WA Stakes & Listed WATC Summer Scorcher) and 18 placings (including the Gr1 Caulfield Stakes, Gr1 Memsie Stakes, Gr1 Railway Stakes, Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes – twice, Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap, Gr1 Newmarket Handicap, Gr1 All Aged Stakes, Gr2 PB Lawrence Stakes & Gr3 WATC Asian Beau Stakes) from 56 starts for $4,465,950 in earnings.
