At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Widden Stud stallion Nicconi (Bianconi-Nicola Lass, by Scenic) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when 5YO gelding Nature Strip (Nicconi-Strikeline, by Desert Sun) scored a brave 0.2-length victory for trainer Chris Waller in the $1 million WFA Gr1 Moir Stakes (1000m), defeating 5YO mare Miss Leonidas & 4YO mare Sunlight. Jumping well in a race with sizzling pace, Nature Strip was allowed to settle into his stride by James McDonald who took a little while to join Ball of Muscle at the head of affairs, before pulling away on the turn to hold out a wall of horses that threatened to haul him in. The favourite, widely believed to be Australia’s fastest horse, improved his record to 11 wins (including the Gr1 Galaxy, Gr2 Ian McEwen Trophy, Gr2 Rubiton Stakes, Listed Creswick Stakes and Listed SAJC Lightning Stakes) and 2 placings from 18 starts for $1,875,285 in earnings.
