Unbeaten Godolphin 2YO Streets Gr1 Rivals

Tuesday, 17th September 2019

UK trainer Charlie Appleby has produced another startlingly brilliant 2YO in the form of Pinatubo (Shamardal-Lava Flow, by Dalakhani) who, after his devastating 9-length victory in the Gr1 Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (7 furlongs) at the Curragh on Sunday, is already even money favourite for the 2020 Qipco 2,000 Guineas. This was the second successive win in the Gr1 for the Godolphin, Charlie Appleby and William Buick team, and maintained the son of Shamardal’s unbeaten record in 5 races. “He's a trainer's dream once you get to know him, because he doesn't excite you in the morning to say the least,” Appleby said of the colt he thinks could be his best 2YO ever. “He just goes through the motions and the jockey gets off and says he's moving well. He goes home and eats, drinks, sleeps and that's the end of it. We only ever see the best of him when he turns up at the track, which is a nice position to be in.” Jockey William Buick was equally enamoured by the Shamardal colt; The performance Pinatubo put in here was special,” he gushed to The Racing Post. “Today was a proper Gr1. It was a hugely exciting performance and it felt as good as it looked.”
