On a glorious Saturday afternoon at Flemington in Melbourne, Darley’s Gr1-winning former shuttler Hard Spun (Danzig-Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when Perth raider, 6YO gelding Gatting (Hard Spun-Stubborn, by Lonhro), left racegoers stunned when scoring a seemingly impossible victory for trainer Darren McAuliffe in the $750,000 Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) over heavily favoured 4YO mare Mystic Journey (Needs Further-White Gold, by Colombia) and 4YO gelding Mr Quickie (Shamus Award-Special Favour, by General Nediym). With Gailo Chop leading as expected from Scales of Justice who was in close attendance, Gatting bowled along very handy to the leaders with Mystic Journey close enough if good enough. Scales of Justice made his move straightening up, but Gatting refused to go away. Despite Mystic Journey giving her all, Gatting – at a giddy $139 on the NSW TAB – gave WA supporters something to cheer about after the West Coast Eagles were bundled out of the AFL Finals on Friday night. The victory, a first Gr1 for his trainer, improved Gatting’s record to 11 wins (also including the Gr2 WA Derby, Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes & Gr3 Hyperion Stakes) and 12 placings (including the Gr1 Railway Stakes, Gr2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes, Gr3 J.C. Roberts Stakes & Gr3 Strickland Stakes) from 38 starts for $1,894,200 in earnings.
