US$8.2 Million for Keeneland Beholder Half-Sister
Big-spending American buyer Mandy Pope, famous for spending $10 million on US broodmare Have de Grace, has struck a decisive blow at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Earlier this morning (AET), the Whisper Hill Farm principal outlaid a mind-boggling US$8.2 million to acquire the trophy filly of the sale, Lot 498, an American Pharoah yearling who boasts sensational credentials. Consigned by Clarkland Farm, who purchased the filly’s now 23-year-old dam for just US$100,000 in 2007, Pope’s latest acquisition is a half-sister to Spendthrift’s superstar multiple Gr1 winner Beholder, Gr1-winning leading US sire Into Mischief, and Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Mendelssohn, whose Gr1 placings include a runner-up in England’s Gr1 Dewhurst Stakes. This is the last foal to be consigned at public auction out of Leslie’s Lady. She is the most expensive filly ever sold at Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale, and shares the equal highest price for a yearling at the venue.
