Libertini Casts Long Shadow In Furious

Friday, 6th September 2019

On Saturday at Randwick, racegoers could be forgiven for thinking Winx has returned to the track when the field for the Gr2 Darley Furious Stakes (1200m) heads to the start. Favourite Libertini, a strapping bay filly, will carry similar coloured silks to the champion, and she is set to start at Winx-like odds as she sets off in pursuit of her second crown in the Darley Princess Series. Having already earned owners Gerry Harvey and John Singleton a free nomination to sensational European sprinter Dark Angel in the Gr2 Silver Shadow Stakes, the leviathan owners look almost certain to also have a free nomination to Darley's magnificent miler Ribchester by the close of play tomorrow as part of the race conditions in the Furious Stakes. As talented as she is, $1.18 is a pretty short quote against Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi($16.00) who looks certain to improve on her first-up effort, and Karaka Million heroine Probabeel ($18.00). The only runner supported to provide Libertini with any sort of a challenge is the Gerald Ryan-trained Villami ($6.50), a Foxwedge daughter of beautifully bred Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes-placed multiple Group winner Galapagos Girl. She led in the Silver Shadow and only tired late, so should strip fitter but even then it's hard to see Villami turning the tables on her conqueror.
