At Caulfield in Melbourne on Saturday, Arrowfield Stud stallion Not a Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice-Singles Bar, by Rory’s Jester) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when Western Australia’s 7YO gelding Scales of Justice (Not a Single Doubt-Beymatilla, by Umatilla held all-comers at bay to score by just under a length for trainer Lindsey Smith in the $1 million New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m). Defeating a game So Si Bon and Godolphin’s fast-finishing duo Alizee and Hartnell, Scales of Justice was handy from the break and stalked the leading division until 300m from home when he made his move. The victory proved several things: the move of Perth’s Lindsey Smith to set up a Victorian satellite stable at Warrnambool is paying off big time; Scales of Justice will be a threat in anything he contests during the Spring – Cox Plate included; and perennial Top 10 sire Not a Single Doubt could be headed for a huge season. Ultra-consistent Scales of Justice improved his record to 11 wins (including the Gr1 Railway Stakes to go with three Gr3 features, among them the recent Gr3 Bletchingly Stakes) and 12 placings (including the Gr1 Kingston Town Classic and Gr2 Bobbie Lewis) for $2,160,850 in earnings.
