At Hastings in New Zealand, Darley's deceased Gr3-winning & multiple Gr1-placed stallion Commands (Danehill-Cotehele House, by My Swanee) celebrated a Gr1 success when the superb 5YO mare Melody Belle (Commands-Meleka Belle, by Iffraaj) bolted from the rear of the field to claim her seventh Gr1, and a repeat victory, in the $200,000 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) for trainer Jamie Richards, defeating 6YO horse Wyndspelle and 5YO gelding Helena Baby. Beaten in her last start at Te Rapa over 1200m, the champion daughter of Commands proved her doubters wrong today as she revealed her recognisable turn of foot, looming wide on the turn under jockey Michael McNab and unleashing down the straight. “All credit to the horse,” McNab gushed in his post race interview. “I had to choose plan B and go back [when she jumped slowly], but she’s just unreal with a great attitude. A no frills type of horse, a warhorse.” Richards admitted that the mare was underdone for her last start at Te Rapa, but that he was confident she was right for the 1400m today - and indeed she was. Melody Belle improved her record to 12 wins (including the Gr1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m), Gr1 Haunui Farm Group One WFA, Gr1 Waikato Sprint, Gr1 Windsor Park Plate, Gr1 Tarzino Trophy, Gr1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, Gr2 Foxbridge Plate, Gr2 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes, Gr3 Mongolian Khan Trophy & Listed Karaka Million) and 3 placings from 22 starts for $1,749,156 in earnings. Melody Belle was purchased for $57,500 by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis on behalf of Fortuna Bloodstock at the 2016 NZB NYSS from the draft of Haunui Farm.
