Pike Eyes Gr1 Derby With Recent Maiden Filly

Wednesday, 29th May 2019

Yet another Gr1 over the Winter Carnival isn't out of the question for Cambridge trainer Tony Pike, who has revealed to Racing Queensland that he will consider throwing in a late nomination for the Gr1 Queensland Derby (2400m) if promising filly Simply Sacred (Blackfriars-Simply Wicked, by Scenic) can win at Ipswich over 2210m on Wednesday. "[She] was very dominant when she won her maiden [over 1685m] at Ipswich last start but we've always had a big opinion of her," Pike said. "The extra distance will suit her. She was late on the scene and missed the Queensland Oaks but if she wins well enough, I might throw in a late nomination for the Derby." If Pike does take that route with the filly, she might be joining stablemate Our Intrigue (Showcasing-Forever And Ever, by Monsun) who is one of the favourites for Saturday's Gr1 Queensland Oaks at Doomben but also nominated for the Derby. The visiting trainer has two Gr1's under his belt already thanks to The Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) in both the Doomben 10,000 and last Saturday's Kingsford Smith, and there is no doubt room on the flight home for a couple more.
