At Morphettville in Adelaide, Woodside Park Stud’s Written Tycoon (Iglesia-Party Miss, by Kenmare) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when 4YO gelding Despatch denied all-comers by a gutsy 0.2-length for trainer Tony McEvoy in the $750,000 Gr1 The Goodwood (1200m), defeating a game late challenge from Behemoth and favoured recent Gr1 winner Spright. The iconic sprint feature suffered a lengthy delay when race favourite Spright had to be re-shod at the start. A horse who has been working strongly through the grades, Despatch provided McEvoy with the perfect present to celebrate his recently announced decision to transfer most of his South Australian horses to a yet to be built stable at the booming state-of-the-art Ballarat training facility in Victoria. For a horse who’d won 5 of his past 6 starts, including a Gr3 sprint at Morphettville at his most recent outing, $21 looked a gift and Todd Pannell’s ride was pitch perfect, controlling the tempo and kicking away while Oliver took the short course home on Spright after his awkward draw forced him to the rear of the field. Sold twice through the Magic Millions ring – at the National Weanling Sale and Adelaide Yearling Sale – and a Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Clockwise Classic winner on debut, Despatch now has 7 wins (including the Gr3 DC McKay Stakes, Listed Oakbank Stakes & Listed Redelva Stakes) and a placing (including the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes) from 11 starts for $952,685 in earnings.
