Enable vs Almond Eye Clash Keenly Awaited
Although racing aficionados will now be left to debate at a purely academic level as to whether European champion mare Enable or world champion mare Winx would have bested one another, a looming clash to decide female supremacy is still on the cards later in 2019, albeit there are more than just two contenders. Trainer John Gosden, who prepares the astonishingly talented Enable, is already gearing up for the first Sunday in October where the daughter of Nathaniel will bid to make it a Gr1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hat-trick (see her second victory below). According to racingtv.com, the 5YO mare will soon start fast work ahead of a potential June return. In a nod to Japanese star mare Almond Eye who was super-impressive recently in Dubai, Gosden noted, “I thought Almond Eye was magnificent – the way she played with that field and quickened. I hope it’s a very wet Longchamp (for the Arc), because she goes well on fast ground, but we don’t know about Almond Eye on soft.” He added, “With the fillies [and mares], these clashes are fantastic for the sport. You’re not sitting there worrying about stallion value.” Enable could be seen first up at either Epsom Downs or Royal Ascot.
