Imelda Mary Trainer Expecting Improvement At Randwick
Despite a disappointing run in the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) a fortnight ago, Matamata based trainer Wayne Hillis believes talented 3YO filly Imelda Mary (Ferlax-Eleesha, by Encosta De Lago) will be on song for the Australian equivalent on Saturday at Randwick. "She wasn't happy in the ground and the way the race was run, a stop-start affair, didn't suit her,'' Hillis told NZ Racing Desk. "The three best credentialled fillies were all out of the money in it and we'd beaten the winner (Sentimental Miss) a couple of times before." The dual-Gr2 winning filly has just completed her local campaign as joint New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year with Queen Of Diamonds (Savabeel-Love Diamonds, by Danehill), and Hillis is no stranger to bringing horses across the pond to claim some Australian prize money. In 2009 he won the Gr3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2500m) at Flemington with Sterling Prince (Colombia), who was also placed on that trip, and Izonit (Volksraad) ran second in the 2010 Gr2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) in Queensland.
