Derby Defection For Coughing Frankely Awesome

Friday, 5th April 2019

Newcastle-based trainer Kris Lees has decided to err on the side of caution with last week’s Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes runner-up Frankely Awesome. A fancied acceptor for Saturday’s Gr1 Australian Derby, Lees has scratched the valuable daughter of World Champion Frankel, reports racingnsw.com.au, after advising Stewards she had not recovered fully from her most recent run and was coughing. Although she will need to undergo a veterinary inspection prior to being allowed to run again, Lees indicated his intention, should he be happy with her progress, to start Frankely Awesome on Saturday 13 April in the Gr1 Australian Oaks where she will likely clash again with her recent conqueror Verry Elleegant. The Cressfield owned-and bred filly will have Hugh Bowman aboard, reports racenet.com, with Lees explaining that the leading jockey would have ridden her in the Vinery Stud Stakes had he not been in Dubai.
