Champion Igugu's Final Son Wins On Debut
3YO Dansili colt El Misk, the final foal of the Australian-bred, South African Horse of the Year Igugu (Galileo), a winner of four elite level races highlighted victories in two of South Africa's greatest; the G1 Durban July and the Gr1 J&B Met, won impressively at his first time of asking, scoring over 2100m in the UK. Raced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, who raced Igugu herself, the John Gosden-trained colt who started the 8-11 favourite in Monday's race holds an entry for June's Gr1 Epsom Derby, the 240th running of the pivotal classic. Having died in 2017, Igugu unfortunately only produced two foals, with the current 4yo Atlaal, an unraced full-sister to El Misk, while Kia Ora Stud, the breeder of Igugu as well as her half relations the G3-winning, G1 placed Honorius and the Listed winner Ngaga, will consign Lot 341 at next week's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, a colt by Vinery Stud's All Too Hard out of the imported mare Zarinia, the dam of Igugu. It is also the family of the David Payne-trained Tarka, the only horse to have beaten the five-time Gr1 winner The Autumn Sun when winning the G2 Stan Fox Stakes.
