At Caulfield in Melbourne, 5YO UK-bred gelding Avilius (Pivotal-Alessandria, by Sunday Silence) provided Godolphin trainer James Cummings with a solid 0.8-length victory in the $160,750 Gr3 T.S.Carlyon Stakes (1600m), defeating 5YO geldings Sikandarabad and Night’s Watch. Although Avilius likes to drop out in his races before rattling home, supporters of the favourite would have had their hearts in their mouths when the field straightened up. Even once he started to go through his gears Avilius still had to navigate his way between horses, but once clear his class stood out and he cruised to the front just in time. Providing Godolphin with some compensation after Kementari was runner-up for the third time in a Caulfield Gr1 feature, Avilius now has 7 wins (including 5 in Australia – among them the Gr3 Bart Cummings Handicap, Gr3 Kingston Town Stakes & Gr3 Premier’s Cup) and 3 placings from his 14 starts for $937,308 in earnings. He also just missed the frame in the Gr1 Cox Plate.
