Pierata Eyeing Gr1 Glory

Wednesday, 31st October 2018

Pierata showed he was on track for Saturday week's Gr1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington when finishing third behind Redzel in a barrier trial at Randwick on Tuesday morning. The Greg Hickman-trained 4YO worked home stylishly over the final 100 metres of the 850m heat which Redzel won under a tight hold in 50.16 seconds. Pierata, whose value as a stallion prospect will soar if he can claim a maiden Gr1 success, is the $6 second favourite for the Darley Classic following his impressive last-start win in the Gr3 Sydney Stakes (1200m) at Randwick. "Tommy [Berry] said the trial was very good and that his last 100 metres was very sharp," Hickman told Sky Sports Radio. "He just went around so we could check his fitness and he did have a bit of a blow afterwards. I'm pretty happy with the trial and where he's at." Hickman added: "We will drive him down in our own float on Wednesday night. It will just be a hit-and-run mission and hopefully he runs well."
