Yucatan Well Ahead of Cup

Tuesday, 30th October 2018

Melbourne Cup favourite Yucatan is reportedly thriving ahead of next Tuesday's $7.3 million staying showpiece. Yucatan firmed into favouritism (he is now a dominant $4.50 market elect with TAB) for Australia's most famous race after demolishing his opposition when making his Australian debut in the Gr2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield on 13 October. "I think Aidan [O'Brien] and Lloyd [Williams] called it right not running in the Caulfield Cup," O'Brien's travelling foreman TJ Comerford told racing.com. "He was a little bit sore coming out of Herbert Power Stakes but he's way better now and he's back to himself. He's going very well and we're very pleased with his work. He's going to work tomorrow morning [Tuesday] and then again on Saturday." Victory in the Melbourne Cup would make Yucatan a valuable stallion prospect as he is by Galileo out of former Champion French filly Six Perfections and hails from the same female line as 10-time Gr1 winning mare Miesque, dam of champion sire Kingmambo.
