Rostropovich Primed for Cup

Tuesday, 30th October 2018

Rostropovich's fifth placing behind Winx in last Saturday's Cox Plate provided him with the perfect hit-out for the Melbourne Cup, reports racenet. The Irish-bred Rostropovich (Frankel-Tyranny, by Machiavellian) proved no match (he was beaten 8.8 lengths) for the champion mare, but owners Coolmore are confident he is now ready to produce a peak performance on the first Tuesday in November. "Aidan [O'Brien] was very pleased with him. He was actually very happy with him," O'Brien's travelling foreman TJ Comerford said. "It was great to run him here and come out of quarantine. That will put him right as well. They went quick there, and it will sharpen him up a lot. He'll be going the same pace at the end of the two miles and he won't have to work as hard early." Comerford added: "He has got a nice break now to the Melbourne Cup and he's got eight stone. The run will bring him on." Rostropovich is currently rated a $17 chance with TAB for the $7.3 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on 6 November.
