At Geelong southwest of Melbourne, Coolmore’s deceased dual Derby-winning shuttler & 6-time Gr1 victor High Chaparral (Sadler's Wells-Kasora, by Dashaan) added a Listed race success when 3YO Australian-bred gelding Home Ground (High Chaparral-First Look, by Danehill Dancer) outstayed his rivals when scoring a strong win in the $120,000 Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) for 3YOs, defeating Farooq & Grinzinger Star. Home Ground, who is out of a sister to former smart stakes winning filly Danehill Smile, was purchased for $420,000 at the 2017 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud. He improved his record to 3 wins and 1 placing from 8 starts for $128,395 in earnings. Trainer John Sargent said Home Ground would now head to the $2 million Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on Saturday week (3 November). "This is the race we thought would suit him. His last two starts in Sydney the wet tracks didn't really suit so we thought we'd bring him to a nice big staying track like this," Sargent told racing.com. "He was only 4 or 5 lengths from Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott's horse in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (Thinkin' Big) and he's the horse to beat in the Derby, and he showed today that he can stay." Sargent added: "He will go straight to the Derby now. He's bred to stay being by High Chaparral so he will see the trip out."
