At Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne, Darley's former Champion Australian Sire & 11-time Gr1-winning World Champion Miler Lonhro (Octagonal-Shadea, by Straight Strike) added a Listed race success when talented 3YO Australian-bred colt Ranier (Lonhro-Kanzan, by Commands) atoned for a desperately unlucky last-start defeat when opening his stakes account in the $120,000 Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) for 3YO colts & geldings, defeating Yulong January & Wild Planet. A homebred for Darley and Godolphin, Ranier is out of the multiple stakes winning mare Kanzan and hails from the family of Gr1 South Australian Oaks winner Lady Liberty and Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude winner Freedom Fields. Trainer James Cummings said Ranier could run next in either the Gr3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) or the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington. He improved his record to 1 win and 5 placings (including the Listed Poseidon Stakes) from 6 starts for $144,570 in earnings.
