Withhold On Track for Melbourne Cup
UK stayer and Melbourne Cup contender Withhold (Shirocco-Storming Sioux, by Storming Home) has pleased connections with a strong piece of work at Werribee on Tuesday morning. The Roger Charlton-trained 6YO was ridden by top Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy who has been booked to ride Withhold when he has his sole Melbourne Cup lead-up in the Gr3 Geelong Cup (2400m) next Wednesday (24 October). Tom Charlton, speaking on behalf of his father, said: "He worked seven furlongs and it was just maintenance work. He's where we want him so it's a question of ticking him over and keeping on top of him as he can get quite fresh, which is a good thing." He added: "He went nice even fractions and just quickened up from the two. I was very pleased with him and Kerrin was very complimentary, he said he's where you'd want him and was really pleased." The form surrounding Withhold was given a significant boost last Saturday when A Prince Of Arran, whom Withhold comfortable defeated in the Northumberland Plate (3200m) in June, finished third to Melbourne Cup favourite Yucatan in the Gr2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield.
